WHAT OFFENSES CAN BE COMMITTED AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT?
i) Resisting the Spirit
Acts 7:51
(NAS) "You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did."
This sin involves stubbornness and openly refusing to obey the instruction of the Lord.
2 Tim 3:8
(NAS) "And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected as regards the faith."
Depraved - Websters: morally corrupt, wicked, or perverted.
ii) Grieving the Spirit
Eph 4:30
(NAS) "And do not grieve the Holy spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."
Grief is a deep sorrow and speaks of intense inner affliction.
If we continue to grieve the Holy Spirit, then His grief turns into vexation (holy anger).
Isaiah 63:10
(NAS) "But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore, He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them."
iii) Lying to the Spirit.
Acts 5:3-5 (NAS) "But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit.
4c ...You have not lied to men, but to God.
5 And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear (to sin) came upon all who heard of it."
iv) Quenching the spirit.
1 Thess 5:19 (NAS) "Do not quench the Spirit."
This means to extinguish, smother, or put out. It is direct disobedience to the Spirits instructions.
v) Blaspheming the Holy Spirit.
Matt 12:24,31-32 (NAS) "But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, 'This man (Jesus) casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.'
31 Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.
32 And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come."
To blaspheme means: "to speak abusively of, to rail or speak contempt against God or sacred things."
This sin means to reject the works of the Holy Spirit as being done by God and to attribute them to demons.
